Below is a list of some key types of therapy we frequently offer for Eating Disorders. It is not exhaustive and there are many sub-categories and other specializations we can provide on need or request.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art as a means of communication. Art therapy offers the opportunity for expression and communication of thoughts and feelings.

Art therapy offers an alternative route towards clients developing the capacity to relate to themselves in a healthy way. Art therapy allows for the expression and controlled release of strong and powerful feelings that are often associated with suffering with an eating disorder.

Art therapy can be particularly helpful for people who struggle to express their thoughts and feelings verbally. Through artistic expression, clients can gain access to their inner feelings and find ways to work through them.

The overall aim of art therapy is to enable practitioners to work with clients to help them effect change and growth on a personal level through the use of art materials in a safe and facilitating environment.

Cognitive Analytical Therapy

It is a time-limited therapy which focuses on repeating patterns that were set up in childhood as a way of coping with emotional difficulties and deprivations. The CAT therapist and the patient, work together to recognise their maladaptive patterns and then to revise and change the patterns.

With a focus on identifying negative thought patterns, this treatment may be able to help clients understand specific psychological components of their eating disorders by considering past experiences and events; and then to revise and change the patterns.

It enables patients and therapist to identify the cause of their eating disorder so it is easily treated.

Patients will be able to understand the cause of their eating disorder and work towards changing their eating patter for the better.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT is a goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping people identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. It is rooted in the understanding that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected, so that by challenging and altering negative thought patterns, you can improve your emotional well-being, and learn better behavioural responses to improve your quality of life.

CBT-e is a type of CBT oriented specifically towards helping people with eating disorder and is offered by some of our specialist dietitians and therapists.

What to Expect

We will start with an assessment of your concerns, relevant history, and what you hope to achieve through therapy. Together we will set specific goals for treatment. During our sessions you'll learn to recognize and understand your thought patterns, especially those contributing to emotional distress or problematic behaviours. You'll work with your therapist to examine and reframe them, developing more balanced, rational, and constructive perspectives. We may also work towards specific behavioural goals such as gradually facing fears or learning desired new habits. 

Clinical Psychologist

A talking therapy that is individual to each clients needs. A clinical psychologist may use a variety of therapeutic interventions to work with a client at the stage they are at in the most appropriate way.

Eating disorders are usually always the result of underlying psychological problems. Talking through things with a psychologist can help clients understand their eating disorder and the origins and from there they can begin to work on how to overcome it.

Psychotherapy helps clients to find new ways of approaching situations that they find difficult and new methods to help them deal with them. The psychologist will work with a client to overcome a specific or general problems, problematic thoughts and behaviours.

Reduces psychological distress whilst enhancing and promoting psychological well being to help client to achieve psychological wellness.

Dietician Specialist

A specialist Dietician will work with you to develop a meal plan that supports your nutritional health, tailored to fit your tastes, lifestyle and resources. They will explain the way your body and brain function and changing nutritional needs and responses. They will assist you in making choices you can enjoy, and offer guidance on how to support you or your family with food preparation, and challenges. Your health is a priority and the dietitian may request prescriptions for supplements if needed. The goal is to ensure you get the nourishment that supports your recovery, and help you develop a happy and healthy relationship with food and your own body.

What to Expect

We will discuss in detail your eating habits, lifestyle and health concerns. Together we’ll develop an individualized plan empowering you to take charge of your nutrition and overall well-being! I will explain all recommendations, the changes your body goes through, and help you overcome unhealthy mindsets and listen to your body so you can eat intuitively and flexibly. Wide-ranging resources make our sessions engaging and enjoyable! 

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy – DBT

It is a combination of cognitive and behavioural therapies to teach people healthy ways to handle painful emotions through acceptance and change. DBT uses four skill sets – interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness – to improve people’s coping skills.

DBT teaches eating disorder sufferers to identify triggers for disordered eating.

It helps sufferers find better ways to respond to stress, such as breathing or relaxation exercises, taking an emotional timeout, or finding a healthy distraction. It also guides eating disorder sufferers through the practice of mindful eating, increasing awareness of emotional responses to food while preparing and eating meals.

Using better ways to cope with stress thereby reducing/treating the eating disorder.

Eating Disorder Coaching

Eating Disorder coaching enables the client to explore and overcome their difficulties in relation to eating disorder, with an expert coach ‘coming alongside’ them, guiding them and helping them find motivation along the recovery journey. An ED coach will help you understand yourself and the reason for your eating disorder better and replace maladaptive harmful thought and behaviours with more beneficial coping techniques and positive approaches to your own life and wellbeing.

What to Expect

Coaching involves psycho-education – learning more about the causes and effects of eating disorder on your body and brain, alongside emotional and cognitive work on unhelpful thinking patterns. We will explore how the E.D is useful to you, and help you build your own strategies, motivation, skills, resilience and resources to empower you to live your life without it.

Family Therapy

They are sessions conducted with both the individual suffering from an eating disorder and his/her closest family members.

 

They are intended to treat everyone in attendance. Very often family members will not even realize their involvement in an eating disorder until these sessions, nor will they truly understand the eating disorder without a professional explanation.

 

Whether they want to or not, families must make changes in order to accommodate the needs produced by an eating disorder and it is this growth that is facilitated through family therapy sessions.

 

Family therapy allows them to investigate how the eating disorder has affected their own lives and how they can be supportive throughout the recovery process as well.

Hypnotherapy

It is a therapy by hypnotism that enables therapist explore client’s subconscious mind in order to determine treatment.

It helps identify the root cause of the problem so that the emotional aspect can be dealt with. Negative behaviour patterns can be looked at and more positive habits can be learnt. Hypnotherapy can help to improve self confidence and self image so that the individual is able to view themselves differently.

The therapist will help the patient to explore and resolve their ambivalence about recovery. Helps to change patterns of behaviour that have become habitual.

To show the patient the value of changing their behaviour, thereby bringing about positive change and a strong desire to maintain the changes over time.

Integrative Psychotherapy 

This treatment is an approach that emphasises the value of the individual.

Therapists try to integrate all aspects of the individuals’ personality such as feeling, perception and unresolved conflicts and make it cohesive in order to encourage the individuals to approach life more positively and without prejudice.

This enables individuals with eating disorders to approach life more positively including ways of eating healthily.

A more positive view of eating healthily and reducing the harm of eating disorder.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy – MET

A style of person-centred counselling developed to facilitate changes in behaviour. MET is most commonly used to treat eating disorders but can also aid with panic attacks and trauma.

MET helps the individual to understand the function of their eating disorder and work on their personal motivation for change.

The therapist will help the patient to explore and resolve their ambivalence about recovery. Helps to change patterns of behaviour that have become habitual.

To show the patient the value of changing their behaviour, thereby bringing about positive change and a strong desire to maintain the changes over time.

Neuro-Linguistic Therapy – NLP

Works with the patient’s unconscious mind to create positive changes in behaviour, thought and perception. An individual’s behaviour can be changed through the application and techniques of NLP by changing the internal perception of an event, which changes the emotional state which creates a different behaviour.

NLP can be an effective treatment in many areas of life. We offer NLP not only for eating disorders but also to help clients with a range of issues such as; focusing, setting life goals, relationships, giving up smoking and careers to name but a few.

It teaches clients to take responsibility of their life, create positive choices and let go of negative emotions. A large amount of willingness and self help is necessary for effective NLP but it can be highly effective.

Clients will improve communication skills, change, develop and evolve themselves and unhealthy thoughts and behaviours. NLP is used to empower individuals to maintain positive life changes and coping skills.

Nutritional Therapy

Education for patients with eating disorders surrounding food and nutrition. Gives detail around portion size, healthy eating, essential vitamins for the body and individual bodily requirements.

The nutritionist aims to improve patient’s nutrition and health related knowledge, emphasise the benefits of change and discuss barriers to change. Aside from the benefits to eating disorder patients, our nutritionist can also offer specific allergy testing and provides nutritional support for sports coaching and a range of individuals both with and without an eating disorder.

It helps the individual to see that their perceptions of a healthy diet may be wrong and provide evidence based information to encourage and promote healthy lifestyles. Educates clients about nutrition and gives practical advice and skills to carry on into everyday life.

Improve patient’s knowledge of nutrition and their dietary intake. This can also decrease a client’s level of anxiety around food and challenges.

Parent Support / Family Communication

Guidance and support for parents/carers with young people with mental health and/or eating disorder in Breathe Therapies.

This support session gives reassurance, advice and information on what to expect in their child’s recovery process, helping the parents/carers to support their child in the most appropriate way.

It is important that the parents/carers understands what is happening for their child and what their child needs in order to provide the best parental support during recovery.

A calm and knowledgeable parent/carer who understands what their child is going through and what their needs are will be best placed to support their child through their recovery.

Psychosexual Therapy

Sessions with a psychosexual specialist specifically for those who are experiencing problems of a psychological, sexual nature. Sexual difficulties are very common and can have many causes.

Within the session, you will explore the connections between mind and body.

Exploring your psychosexual experiences with a specialist will enable you to overcome any sexual issues in a safe space.

A better understanding of where the issues have stemmed from and the tools to move forward and overcome any issues if they arise again.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy

A talking therapy directed towards developing and achieving the client’s vision of solutions.

Helps client to move forward and away from being stuck in cycles and patterns of negative behaviours and thoughts within their eating disorder. With focus on the present and future, client’s can begin to learn what their life can be without an eating disorder and help them grasp an understanding of their future after an eating disorder.

Focus is on solutions and is goal orientated rather than being problem focused. Solution Focused Brief Therapy focuses on the present and future, not the past. The therapist helps the patient construct a vision of their preferred future and identify times in their current life that are close to this. This method helps bring light to small successes and by raising awareness, helps clients to repeat these.

The therapist helps the patient to move towards the preferred future they identified without an eating disorder.

Supportive Clinical Management – SSCM

The focus is on the bio-psycho-social wellbeing of the individual. This involves risk assessments, mental and physical health assessments, goal setting, reviews, psycho-education, family interventions and more, delivered in a person centric, needs led way.

The clinical management of an individual involves the alleviate of symptoms of the eating disorder and a supportive psychotherapeutic approach to the thoughts, feelings and beliefs around the person’s behaviour and issues that are identified by them to being important.

As treatment progresses less focus is on clinical management of a patient as they become more stable and the focus shifts to more supportive psychotherapy.

VR Therapy

As Flourish Therapies is a not for profit organisation who are constantly seeking new technologies that will aid treatment for our clients in their recovery and wellbeing, we are pleased to announce that we are the first organisation in the North West to implement VR technology into mental health, eating disorders, obesity and wellbeing treatment and therapy.

The application of VR Therapy for therapies aimed to treat anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and many more has consistently proven effective. 

 

Patients treated with VR therapy require 33% fewer sessions, meaning that the recovery time and process could be much more effective for anyone suffering with mental health, eating disorders, obesity or wellbeing issues.

A substantial amount of research has been conducted into the success of virtual reality therapy, with a study showing that both statistically and clinically meaningful reductions in PTSD, anxiety and depression symptoms occurred after including VR in treatments.

VR Therapy improves treatment of multiple disorders, as the therapeutic modules allow a total immersion, control of the parameters of the exhibition, and the possibility of repetition of the scenes.
